Gene

Description: Gene is thirty years old looking back to his time that he spent in the high school he attended named Devon. He is excellent in academics but very poor in sports. He is obedient and displined. Gene's roomate is his best friend named Finny.

Age: Gene is 16 and at the end of the book he is 17.

Job: Student.

Relationships: His best friend is Finny. He is also a friend to Brinker but comes to conflict with an old friend named Leper.

Symobolism: Gene symbolizes human nature. Gene was jealous of Finny's status in school, which in life we see people's friendship broken because of jealousy, guilt and other things that brake up relationships.

Personality: Gene is very observant. Gene is a hard working student and likes to have fun with Finny. He starts to love-hate Finny for being the best athlete at school and for always getting away with everything. In some way you can say that he has a jealous personality. He is also has a hard time with guilt becuase he tries to be like Finny after he pushes him off the tree by dressing up like him to remove the guilt.

Character-Theme-Tie-In: The theme is chose for gene is Denial. Gene faces denial after pushing Finny. Gene was having a hard time accepting that he had done such a thing to his own best friend.
Gene is a "savage underneath," as Leper tells him, and he never is able, not even 15 years later, to come to terms with this.

Brinker

Description: Brinker plays second biggest role in A Separate Peace. He is a student leader, he is somehow aggressive. He is also a show off and he likes to act like a tough guy so that no one will pick on him. He knows how to manipulate and twist people around to be on the top.

age: Brinker is 16.

Job: Student

Relationship: Brinker is friends with Gene and Leper.

Symbolism: I think Brinker symbolizes Obama because he has a way of speaking to people that gets them on his side, like when tried to get Gene to enlist with him. He also represents Obama because Obaama is a leader and so is Brinker.

Personality:
Brinker is rather strange he makes long-running jokes with rather sinister undertones, he seems very independent and determined, and seems like he's his own person. He is the one who starts enlistment on campus, and then changes his mind by chickening out because Gene won't go with because Finny returns to Devon the next morning. He's a bit of a paradoxical character, and a kind of foil to the rebellious, free-spirited Finny.

Character-Theme-In: The theme I chose for Brinker is Leadership because he is always standing up for himself and he doesnt let anyone boss him around. He is a strong character becuase he is the one who pushes Finny to believe that it was indeed Gene that pushed him off the tree. He's also strength becasue he is not afraid to confront people just like he incouraged Finny about the accident. Bisacly his theme is boldness and backbone, he is leader.
