Personality: Gene is very observant. Gene is a hard working student and likes to have fun with Finny. He starts to love-hate Finny for being the best athlete at school and for always getting away with everything. In some way you can say that he has a jealous personality. He is also has a hard time with guilt becuase he tries to be like Finny after he pushes him off the tree by dressing up like him to remove the guilt.
Character-Theme-Tie-In: The theme is chose for gene is Denial. Gene faces denial after pushing Finny. Gene was having a hard time accepting that he had done such a thing to his own best friend.
Gene is a "savage underneath," as Leper tells him, and he never is able, not even 15 years later, to come to terms with this.
